As part of the topic ‘Fire, Fire!’, Year 1 visited the Discovery museum and participated in a historical walking tour. In the Discovery museum the children explored how Newcastle had changed over time, celebrated 135 years of the Hoppings and looked at inventions from the North East. The children also saw the bridges we had been learning about last half term and got the chance to build their own – although we weren’t very successful! After a delicious lunch we met Richard Stevenson at St Mary’s heritage centre and walked the path the Great fire of Gateshead took, acting out parts along the way, before exploring Bessie Surtees house and discovering how they stopped the fire from spreading. We then walked back to St Mary’s heritage centre to make up our own song about the fire. We all very tired but had had a great day learning all about the past!
